January 2003

Hot off the Prez

The New Year is upon us, and what a year it will be! We finished off 2002 with a bang! Love Rides the Rails, or Will the Mail Train Run Tonight was truly a success. The crowds loved it, and I can tell you as part of the cast, that the show was a blast to perform and interact with the audience.

Thanks to Michelle Johnson and Jan Delaney for directing, and Fairy Riter for producing this zany melodrama. You all did a fantastic job. Thanks also to all those that helped with our Christmas float. Michael Short with his artistic flair, and Todd Grieser with his ingenious craftsmanship, led the team that brought this wonderful Christmas circus train to life. There was a great deal of time and energy put into the float, with lots of people helping at different times and places. You all should be proud, because that float was just plain amazing!

2003 has already started out in high gear. Thanks to those who helped on January 4th to tear the lights down on our display for Archbold's Festival of Lights. Melanie Nagel and Teresa Van Sickle already have practice under way for Children's Letters to God. We are all very excited to be the first community theatre to have the opportunity to perform this new children's musical. The music and story line are simply fantastic. This is a show that everyone will enjoy, and after listening to the music, I can tell you that I believe this will become an all-time favorite over the years for children's theatre.

Unfortunately, the New Year has also come with some sad news. Michelle Johnson submitted her letter of resignation from the ACT Board of Trustees due to "personal and health concerns." This came as a terrible shock to all of us at the meeting and I'm sure to most of you as well. Michelle simply needs to cut way back on her work load and stress level. She has served dutifully on our board for many years, as well as serving on many committees. She previously served as Secretary and since September of 2002, Vice President of Production. At the deadline for this article, the Board of Trustees has yet to appoint a replacement for this office or fill her place on the board. Those are tough shoes to fill.

Michelle was ACT's Mary Short Award winner in 2001. She has acted, directed, designed and painted sets, served as our OCTA representative and a host of other things. You probably have seen her a thousand times and not known it. She is a very quiet and reserved person and would be considered by most to be a wallflower. What am I saying? My nose seems to be growing! Everyone always knows exactly where Michelle is. She is full of fun and energy and we'll miss her. She will however remain active as the costume mistress and do some painting now and then. Thanks for all your hard work Michelle.

May you each have a fantastic year, and make a point to try new things and new experiences. If you feel like getting out of the house, get involved with ACT! We are very much in need of new people with new energy and ideas. There is something for everybody on stage, behind the scenes, or on any of our committees. If you'd like to, call me or any of our board members and we will see that you find something to do that you enjoy. Make new friends and become part of ACT's Commitment to Excellence!
