| Serving the Community Through Community
Theatre
|
| One of the duties of the Development,
Nominating/Membership Committee is to prepare a slate of candidates for
the upcoming Board elections, which are held each September. Our Board of
Trustees consists of twelve members. The term of office is three years. No
trustee shall be eligible to serve more than two consecutive full
three-year terms. The terms are staggered so three trustee positions
become vacant annually.
Each year the D, N/M Committee carefully considers the needs of the Board. They look at which Board member's terms have expired. Are they interested in serving another term? Are they eligible? How about other candidates? Suggestions? Volunteers? The Board provides a means for an organization to keep in touch with the community it serves. A Board that reflects the diversity of its community can govern the organization to serve that community's diversity of interests. What exactly does our Board do? Quite simply, it runs the organization. We have six committees: Executive, Production, Facilities, Development, Finance, and Reading. Each Board member serves on at least one of these committees. The Board of Trustees meets 5 times a year. Depending on the committee(s) you serve, you may have several other meetings to attend. Each production requires many hours of work. The director, assistant director, and the actors spend many hours rehearsing lines, blocking, learning songs and dances. Creating the sets and costumes takes the time and talents of many. Then there are the support people, lights, sound, stage crew, dinner theatre coordinator/hosts, ushers, and house manager. You can't forget the members of the Reading Committee who read many, many plays in order to select those special four that make up our season. You can't forget the members of the Facilities Committee who maintain Giffey Hall and our costume/prop storage area. This includes cleaning up before and after the productions. How about the Production Committee that coordinates the production staff, support staff, ticket sales, and advertising. The Executive Committee recruits the directors and sets the calendar. The Development Committee runs the annual Advertiser and Membership campaigns. And the list goes on and on. But when those stage lights come up, even though it's been a lot of work, there's a real sense of accomplishment. And after that final curtain call, after the applause has stopped, after the costumes and props are put away, the set has been struck, and the actors are adjusting to life at home again, you sit back and tell yourself, "this has really been worth it"! A good Board of Trustees is essential to a successful community theatre. If you are interested in serving, please contact any one of our present Board members. |
